You’re really only as good as the people that stand behind you, so it is always critical to have people on your team that mean well by you and have your best interests at heart. Your team should be able to block any of the silly things that may come your way, so make sure that you have people that you can trust on board with you. These people should be able to keep your feet on the ground and be truthful – even when it might hurt your feelings. Afterall, that change in musical direction or publicity campaign might not be the best fit for you, but surround yourself with ‘yes-men’ and nobody will tell you not to go with it.
We are not by any means saying that you have to be apart of a crew in order to be successful, but what we are saying is that you will be able to free yourself from other things, by having key people on your team, that can deal with things for you, while you focus on the bigger things – such as taking and elevating the company to new heights. They may have helped you write your first songs, carried your equipment to the venue, well-advised on the content of your EPK, or simply offered encouragement when you felt the world was against you.
The key is to stay close with your people as your star rises. You should always make sure that if you eat, your team eat…stay loyal to them, and they will in all likelihood reciprocate. Their presence will pay back dividends to you. It will always come back to haunt you should you make it – so, be sure to build a solid team and your chances of success will probably come sooner than you’d think, negative all of the heartache and greed. You should always remember that publicist, that promoter, that investor, that first client or fan that started out with you, you must always remember them, and stay true – your team is what and who will make or break you.
